UM1 underground sensor

Product Range

Surge arresters are electrical devices designed to protect power systems and electrical equipment from high-voltage surges, such as those caused by lightning strikes, switching operations, or other transient overvoltages. They work by safely diverting excessive electrical energy to the ground, thereby preventing damage to equipment like transformers, circuit breakers, and other critical infrastructure.

During normal operation, surge arresters remain inactive and allow the system to function without interference. When a high-voltage surge occurs, the arrester activates, offering a low-resistance path for the excess voltage to safely discharge to the ground. Once the surge subsides, the arrester returns to its high-resistance state, isolating itself from the system and resuming normal operation.

Traditional method

The primary purpose of line spacers is to prevent the conductors from touching each other or other parts of the power line infrastructure, thereby reducing the risk of electrical faults, flashovers, and short circuits during new line construction, line upgrades or conductor galloping mitigation.

Traditional method

Fire mesh installation on wooden power poles involves the attachment of a fire-resistant mesh or barrier to the pole's surface, preventing the spread of fire from nearby vegetation or other sources to the wooden pole.

Traditional method

Lead line stringing is commonly used in the construction of new power lines, as well as in the replacement or upgrade of existing lines. The installation of a pilot or lead line along the path where the main conductor or wire will run can be challenging over difficult terrain.

DN8 Adapter Kit

This practical testing and filling adapter kit includes DN8 self-sealing couplings to fit most breakers and all DILO measuring devices. The testing and filling kit ensures that no SF6 is released into the atmosphere during coupling and uncoupling. An SF6 regulator with a stainless steel internal diaphragm is also included in the kit.

DN20 Adapter Kit

 

This practical adapter kit contains DILO DN20 transition pieces for the most commonly used SF6 gas compartment connections. The self-sealing couplings ensure that no SF6 is released into the atmosphere during coupling and uncoupling. Carrying case with custom foam inserts included for easy transport and storage.

About the company

Northern Transformer’s Maple Ontario manufacturing facility comprises of 90,000 sq. ft. factory space with another 15,000 sq. ft. of office space for engineering and customer support. Adjacent to the factory is an additional 55,000 sq. ft. of production expansion space. Northern Transformer’s primary focus is the design and manufacture of liquid filled Power Transformers, Grounding Transformers and Specialty Transformers ranging from 5MVA to 200 MVA with a maximum primary voltage of 260kV (1050kV BIL).


Power Transformers 5-200 MVA

Every Northern Transformer liquid filled power transformer is built to the customer’s specific needs taking great care to meet and exceed industry standards applicable for that customer’s region such as CSA C88 M90, ANSI C57.12.00, IEC and IEEE.

Northern Transformer designs, manufactures and tests power transformers in North America up to 200MVA and 260kV. The transformers are customizable with bushings being cover or side mounted with custom junction boxes or bus ducts to match existing and new infrastructure. In tank or compartment style DETCs (De-Energized Tap Changers) or ULTCs (Under Load Tap Changers) are available for either low voltage or high voltage windings depending on your requirements.

Tank

Tank welding is performed to CSA’s W59-M1989 requirements and a dye penetrant leak test is performed on all welds and seams to identify and eliminate any leaks. To ensure a long tank life, tanks are shot blasted with metal beads to a white metal and immediately primed and painted to a minimum of 5 mm thickness using a UV resistant two-part epoxy or powder coated. All tanks are engineered and manufactured to withstand full vacuum.

Coils

All coil winding is performed by hand by our skilled winders with decades of experience. Our experienced winders can detect naturally occurring defects in the conductor and address them prior to the transformer assembly process. Depending on the customer’s preference, we use copper or aluminum conductor and winding types of layer, foil, disc and helical. Each winding type has its own merits and we are happy to explore the different design options with our customers.

Assembly

Great care is taken into our assembly work. All insulation material is of the highest quality and tolerances are selected to ensure longevity and higher BIL withstand than typically found in the market. For paper wrapped conductor insulation, Northern Transformer uses Thermally Upgraded Kraft paper and we offer our customers the option of using premium winding insulations such as Nomex to increase longevity of the transformer.

Core

Northern Transformer’s designs are primarily based upon a three limb cruciform core design. Where customers require lower core losses (No Load Losses) or have noise concerns, higher grade core steel is available. For larger transformers, various core cooling options are available.

Disconnect Switches


Vertical Break Switches

Southern States’ latest innovation, the EV-2H, supports reliability through its unique design. This heavy duty, highly efficient vertical break disconnect switch utilizes independent mechanical and electrical systems to produce the strongest possible design with the easiest accessible maintenance. An over toggle mechanism in both open and closed positions prevents the possibility for the blade to close in extreme weather and increases down force for high fault performance. Metal encased coil spring counterbalances reduce operating effort, are impervious to weather, and prevent catastrophic failure that is possible with linear springs. Using an all stainless steel bearing also ensures a long life in all operating conditions.

Center Break Switches

The EC-2 and EC-2V, our latest innovation in center break switches, are robust, highly efficient designs that utilize an independent mechanical and electrical system to produce the strongest possible design with the most efficient current transfer method. The heavy duty hinge utilizes robotically welded aluminum shunts and a one-piece stainless steel rotating pivot with marine grade bushings, providing maximum rigidity and current carrying surface area, ensuring reliable performance. Using a stainless steel bearing also ensures long life in all operating conditions.

Double End Break Switches

The RDA-1 and RDA-1V aluminum double end break switches are the latest innovations from Southern States. These double end break designs require minimal phase spacing and are ideally suited for applications prone to ice formations and high fault currents due to its rotating blade and reverse loop contacts. In addition, the “V” style configuration allows for mounting on structures that require minimal footprint.

The Southern States CapSwitcher®, a capacitor switching device specifically designed to meet the power quality needs of today’s electrical systems, has become a prefered switching method for medium and high voltage capacitors. This special purpose SF6 capacitor switcher is available for application on single bank or back-to-back banks. Its closing resistors provide transient mitigation to minimize the detrimental effects of voltage transients, including voltage magnification, on sensitive equipment such as computers, CNC machines, and variable speed drives. Product range


CURRENT LIMITING AND NEUTRAL GROUNDING REACTORS

Current limiting reactors are needed to limit short-circuit currents to a level compatible with the capability of other system components. The product range includes load flow control, load balancing and bus-tie reactors. They can be installed up to the highest system voltages (765 kV). The Company supplies neutral grounding/earthing reactors that are connected between the neutral of the transmission network and ground/earth in order to limit the line-to-earth fault current.


HARMONIC FILTER AND CAPACITOR REACTORS

Harmonic filter reactors are used in combination with capacitors and resistors to form filter circuits that reduce the harmonic content in power systems. The Company’s capacitor damping or inrush current limiting reactors are installed in series with the capacitor bank, while its discharge reactors are connected to the bypass circuit.

REACTORS FOR SHUNT AND FACTS APPLICATIONS

Coil Innovation’s shunt reactors are used to compensate capacitive reactive power generated by lightly loaded transmission lines or underground cables. They can be connected to the transformer tertiary winding or directly to the high-voltage (HV) bus or transmission line with system voltages up to 500kV. Flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) application includes several types of reactors thyristor-controlled shunt reactors (TCR), thyristor-switched reactors (TSR), thyristor-switched capacitor reactors (TSC), thyristor-controlled series capacitor reactors (TCSC), and mechanically switched shunt reactors (MSR).

REACTORS FOR MECHANICALLY SWITCHED CAP BANKS

The concept of mechanically switched capacitors with damping network (MSCDN) represents a cost-effective solution to provide reactive power compensation and harmonic control. A typical installation consists of large capacitor banks, large reactors and damping resistors, arranged as a C-type harmonic filter directly connected to the high-voltage system. Reduced losses are achieved at fundamental frequency by means of a resonance between the reactor and an auxiliary capacitor.


REACTORS FOR HVDC AND UHVDC APPLICATIONS

High and ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC / UHVDC) transmission schemes are used for bulk power transmission. The systems are also used for back-to-back and sea cable interconnections, as well as for the grid connection of renewable energy facilities such as offshore windfarms. Depending on the converter technology, LCC (line-commutated converters) or VSC (voltage source converters), these schemes include smoothing or converter reactors, AC and DC harmonic filter reactors and PLC-noise filter reactors. Smoothing reactors reduce the ripple current magnitude that is present in a DC system. Smoothing reactors are installed in HVDC schemes with system voltages up to 1100kV and may reach 250MVAr equivalent power ratings (50Hz equivalent power) per coil unit.

REACTORS FOR INDUSTRIAL AND MOBILITY APPLICATIONS

Reactors for industrial applications may be, for example, smoothing reactors used in power electronics applications such as variable speed drives and uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS). Smoothing and converter reactors are further used for mobility applications, such as for railway converters. Typical industrial applications are Static Var Compensation (SVC) and STATCOMs employed in steelworks or smelting operations with electric arc-furnaces (EAF). In the power supply of electric arc-furnaces (EAF) series reactors may also be installed, called arc-furnace reactors or sometimes buffer reactors. The function of these reactors is to help optimize the power factor for the purpose of stabilizing the electric arc during the melting process and to reduce the electrode consumption. They are typically equipped with taps for inductance adjustment.

POWER LINE CARRIER REACTORS (LINE TRAPS)

Power line carrier (PLC) technology is a traditional, economical and reliable method of power systems communication. When connected in series with the transmission line, PLC reactors (line traps) present low impedance at power frequency and maintain high impedance at power line carrier frequencies (30kHz500kHz). The international sales of line traps produced by Coil Innovation are handled by the company ARTECHE located in Spain, which has an exclusive agreement with Coil Innovation.

Meiden’s dead tank vacuum circuit breakers are the optimal switching equipment for the green grid. These breakers utilize dry air as an insulating medium in place of SF6, a potent greenhouse gas. Sustainably designed and emissions-free, these high-performance VCBs are capable of approximately five times more mechanical operations and four times more interruptions of rated breaking current than standard gas-insulated circuit breakers.

With the founding of Meiden America Switchgear (MAS) in Greenville, South Carolina, Meiden’s DT VCB products will now be assembled in the United States!

Shaped Wire Compact Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductor, Steel-Reinforced (ACSR/TW) is a type of conductor made by stranding trapezoidal-shaped 1350-H19 aluminum wires around a high-strength steel core.

In one design, the ACSR/TW conductor has the same aluminum cross-sectional area as standard ACSR, resulting in a smaller conductor diameter but maintaining the same ampacity level and reducing wind loading.

In the second design, the conductor diameter is the same as standard ACSR, resulting in significantly lower conductor resistance and increased current rating with the same conductor diameter.

The new generation ACCC® (Aluminum Conductor Composite Core) is a highly energy-efficient and cool conductor. It consists of one or more layers of trapezoidally shaped hard-drawn and annealed 1350-0 aluminum wires on a central core made of lightweight carbon-glass fiber composite.

The ACCC® Conductor utilizes a carbon fiber core that is 25% stronger and 60% lighter than a traditional steel core. This, coupled with the trapezoidal-shaped aluminum strands, increases the aluminum content in ACCC® by over 28% without increasing the overall diameter or weight of the conductor.

company History

Midal Cables Limited was established in 1977 conceived between Intersteel, Bahrain and Olex Cables, Australia to manufacture aluminum rod and overhead electrical transmission cables, conductors. Since then, the company has developed into a significant player in the aluminum and electrical transmission industry in Kingdom of Bahrain. Its growth has contributed to the industrialization of Bahrain and Gulf countries while promoting a national skilled workforce within the company. Midal supplies the world market with rod cast from the molten aluminum delivered directly from Aluminium Bahrain (ALBA) smelter adjacent to its manufacturing plant. The liquid aluminum is exceptionally pure which allows Midal to cast rod and further production of wires an exceptionally high conductivity in various grades of transmission cables. Midal's EC grade and 6201 alloy rod are sold around the world as well as being used in-house to manufacture a full range of overhead electrical conductors and aluminum wires.

Test facilities

A well equipped Product Testing Facility is available at Midal Cables to take care of the product validation and quality test requirements. The Quality Control Laboratory of Midal Cables Bahrain has been accredited by International Accreditation Service ( IAS ) for its conformance to the requirement of ISO/IEC 17025 standard. Midal's Quality Laboratory can boast to have the capability to carry out all the mechanical and electrical tests according to specification standards like ASTM, IEC , EN and various other international standards prevailing in the industry. Multiple number of state of the art Metal Analyzers, Universal Tensile Testing machines , Tensile Torque Testing equipment , Temperature compensated Resistance bridges , portable conductor measuring equipments are the few key equipments to name. Midal Quality Control Laboratory is also geared up to carry out and certify all major type testing requirements of over head transmission line conductors.

PRODUCT OFFERING

The COYOTE Closure Family features durable high-density thermoplastic shells that weigh less than their stainless steel counterparts.  For loose tube buffer type fiber, the 6.5" x 22" COYOTE™ Closure handles up to 144 splices and the 8.5" x 22" COYOTE™ Closure handles up to 288 splices.

CUSHION-GRIP Suspensions are intended for use on all aluminum based conductors, and are designed to reduce the static and dynamic stresses at the support point so that the conductor is protected against the effects of oscillations. The conductor is cushioned by field proven, integral elastomer inserts, which guard against abrasion, wear, and fatigue.

The FIBERLIGN® Downlead Cushion secures Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) downleads or ADSS cable downleads to structures while minimizing compressive clamping forces which could be transferred to the optical elements.

The FIBERLIGN® Suspension provides superior cable and fiber protection at the support point.  The combination of Structural Reinforcing Rods, Outer Rods, boltless housing and resilient inserts reduces compression, clamping, and bending stresses on cable.  Negative weather related cable motion, such as aeolian vibration, galloping, and wind sway are also minimized.

PLP's Spiral Vibration Damper reduces Aeolian Vibration (the high frequency, low amplitude vibration caused by horizontal wind passing across the line. It it designed to be used on OPGW and conductors with an outside diameter less than 0.75".

VORTX Dampers respond to wind induced line vibration that is characterized by high frequency, low amplitude motion a.k.a. aeolian vibration. The VORTX™ damper with Large and Small weights can achieve greater power dissipation and frequency response performance than “symmetrical weight” Stockbridge damper designs.  Wider frequency coverage translates into better protection as energy is more effectively dissipated over the entire range of conductor/cable frequencies.
